Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
