British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
